The British tennis star secured the most notable success of his professional journey by rallying from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this triumph signifies Norrie's initial victory over a current world No 1.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth English competitor in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I fell in the first round of qualies here. I just tried to appreciate my performance in the latter part of the year. To get a win like this, it's the greatest success of my tennis journey, my first win over the top player and probably the strongest athlete in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine finals in a row and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which marked the best series of outcomes in the young champion's developing career.

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he sailed in the opening set. However, the British contender gradually worked himself into the match by executing with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, demanding rallies. His persistent steadiness and reliability steadily made an impact.

For much of the match, the world number one delivered strong serves but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old seemed especially uneasy striking his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the world for most of this season, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, the British player gave his opponent very few errors, keeping up his reliability, physicality and power throughout while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to force himself into the court and attack well.
