Shutting the Hemp ‘Opening’

The bill practically closes the hemp “loophole” arising from the 2018 Farm Bill. The piece of legislation crafted a definition for hemp distinct from cannabis.

This bill specified hemp as any form of cannabis species or its extracts containing no greater than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight.

Δ9 THC is the most prevalent common, intoxicating substance present in cannabis.

Marijuana and hemp are each varieties of the cannabis plant, but they are structurally dissimilar. While hemp has less than 0.3% THC, marijuana contains much greater.

This designation described in the Farm Bill recategorized hemp as an farming commodity; at the same time, marijuana remains an illegal Schedule 1 drug.
