Exclusive: The Way Magic: The Gathering's Avatar Expansion Revives Two Popular Tribal Mechanics
Magic: The Gathering fans frequently enjoy tribe-based tactics — who hasn't built an elf deck at some point? — while the upcoming ATLA Universes Beyond release revives 2 well-known examples which fit perfectly to the setting.
Returning Tribal Abilities
One first mechanic, known as "Allies," first debuted with a Zendikar which provides buffs whenever additional permanents bearing the Ally subtype come onto the battlefield.
Meanwhile, "Shrine" represents an enchantment type which originated with Kamigawa. Although not a creature tribal theme, these enchantments likewise become strength as you controls more Shrines in play.
The Comeback for the Ally Ability
Although Shrines have shown up sporadically in recent releases, the Ally mechanic has been seldom seen — until this changes with ATLA, in which the mechanic is central.
Aang must recruit a lot of allies on his quest to restore peace to the four nations, so there's no more fitting way to show this in a Magic set.
Exclusive Cards Showcase
Following its initial card announcement, below is previews at an Ally and a Shrines cards from the new Avatar: The Last Airbender release.
Teo: A Fan-Favorite Figure
Teo is a popular supporting character in ATLA, a young man of Earth Kingdom that resided at an Air Temple following his home was ruined by a flood, an event that left him paraplegic.
Due to his dad's expertise in engineering, he is able to fly in the air using his glider, and dares Aang to a flying contest.
The card Teo reproduces his love of the skies and his tribe's use on gliders through letting you loot whenever a player attacks using a flying creature, and additionally strengthening your team via counters at the same time.
Northern Air Temple: The Strong Shrine
Speaking of his dwelling, it is represented as a card named Northern Air Temple, that drains an opponent's life upon entering the battlefield, depending on how many Shrine cards you control.
The card also removes one more life anytime a Shrine comes onto the battlefield.
This appears to be a strong card, considering its low cost and valuable ETB effect.
One major drawback for Shrine decks in formats besides Commander is that Shrines are typically legendary permanents, but Northern Air Temple can be effective when paired with Sanctum of Stone Fangs, which deals damage to all opponents during the start of your turn.
