EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
