Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in defense or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and support this national charter," the officials declared in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that violate the statutes or our constitution."
The Former President's Furious Response
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a heated reaction from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a unified statement condemning the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in America," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the safety of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical online messages and retract his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a response.
"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this United States and took an pledge to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No threat, pressure, or incitement will deter us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it punishable by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the ex-president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."
Further Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that is historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official declared. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to organize a digital communication to members of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our military rests on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
